If it isn't yet obvious, let's get it out of the way: The Bible does not say you can't drink alcohol. I hear the cheers and the gasps from here. Now, whether or not you should we'll discuss further but the Bible is crystal clear about one thing concerning this topic - you should never get drunk on alcohol.
Paul, who was dealing with an abuse of alcohol that had reached the church in Ephesus reminds us that we should never give our faculties up to anything or anyone other than the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:15-18). What is getting drunk? It is when you lose your cognitive function and control. Unfortunately, even when the stomach says, "Don't take another sip" the brain often ignores the message. Until later of course.
Proverbs alone is filled with warnings about drunkenness. Every time the Bible talks about drunkenness, it is bad. Noah got drunk and shamed himself. Lot got drunk, two nights in a row, and committed incest with his daughters. And today, the consequences of drinking and driving can cost you or someone else their life.
It doesn't take much common sense to realize that drunkenness leads to nothing good. Yet that is something that sought by many after a long week. In the end, it leads to heartache, poor health, and ultimately, debauchery.
Here's a better idea: Instead...be filled with the Spirit...in His grip.
